Manmohan Yadav studied at the Government English School, Tapah and the Anglo-Chinese School, Ipoh. After a short stint as a teacher, he joined the University of Western Australia where he completed his doctoral thesis in 1969, on neonatal immune mechanisms of macropod marsupials on a University Scholarship. Then on a Nuffield Postdoctoral Fellowship, he conducted further pioneering research on the role of the thymus in Marsupials. These studies contributed to the understanding of the development of immunity in pouched neonates. |
Dr. M. Yadav joined University of Malaya in 1970 and immediately established a course in Immunology and started accepting students for the Masters and PhD thesis in this field. In 1974 he went on sabbatical leave to the Institute of Immunology at University of Toronto on the prestigious IDRC Research Fellowship. On his return he initiated research studies jointly with the University Hospital Paediatric Department, on milk allergy in infants because the disorder was a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children three decades ago. The research team reported for the first time, the relationship between milk protein allergy, enteropathy and lactose intolerance. The team continued to pioneer work on allergy to cow’s milk, soya bean, and egg proteins. They also developed tissue culture techniques to determine sensitivity of the gut in immediate and delayed responses to milk allergens. Over 40 research papers including chapters, on various aspect of allergy were published in peer-reviewed prestigious journals and books.
From 2003 to 2005, Dr. Yadav regularly contributed popular articles on various aspects of allergy to the monthly family magazine ‘Parenthood’. In 2005 he released a book entitled “Causes and Prevention: Allergy and Asthma” which has received good reviews. He is also invited to write articles on allergy in Newspapers.
Apart from the studies on allergy, Dr. Yadav also initiated a second research interest, investigating the role of viruses in the development of Cancer. In the early years around 1979, he established molecular and immunological detection techniques for Epstein-Barr virus in Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Later in 1985 he included other viruses particularly Human Herpes virus-6, 7 and 8, and Human Papilloma virus (HPV) in his studies of the oral and cervical carcinoma. Many papers on aspects of the expression of oncogenes in breast cancer, and virus developmental antigens in cervical carcinoma and oral cancer were published in international journals. Funding for his research was from many international sources.
He has received many honours. In 1979 he was a visiting Professor to College de France in Paris as an invitee of the French Government, and in 1979-1980 he was World Health Organization fellow at University College, London. Professor Yadav has presented his research work in over 50 Conferences throughout the world and attended numerous workshops. He has published over 245 research papers and abstracts in referred international and national journals. Professor Yadav is active in various National Societies. He was the President of the Malaysian Society of Health in 1997 and 1998 an under its auspices he organized the first ever Allergy Conference in Malaysia in 1998. He was awarded the MSH Gold Medal in 2002 for his contribution to medical research.
At University of Malaya, Dr. Yadav became an Associate Professor in 1975 and Full Professor in the field of immunology in 1991. He was the Head of the Department of Genetics and Cellular Biology in 1992-94 and retired from University in September 1996. As visiting professor he has lectured to post-graduate students at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya, and the Tun Hussain Onn Eye Hospital, Kuala Lumpur from 1997 to 2002.
